Exclusive Shore Event: Istanbul | Turkish Treasures
The megalopolis of Istanbul may span two continents, but its central core is dense with dazzling monuments reflecting 2,000 years of history. We'll begin our exploration of the city's riches at Hagia Sophia, built in AD 537. This incredibly beautiful domed structure was the greatest church in Christendom until the conquest of Constantinople in 1453 by Sultan Mehmet II, when it became a mosque. A museum since 1934, its richly decorated interior tells fascinating stories of a shifting religious landscape. Next we'll visit Topkapi Palace, residence of the sultans for almost three centuries. The palace was also the seat of government for the Ottoman Empire, and housed some 4,000 people, including the sultan's vast court and harem.
We'll transfer to The Four Seasons Sultanahmet, located in the heart of the old city, for a lunch of traditional cuisine on the private rooftop terrace with sweeping city views and live musical entertainment. We will continue our explorations with a visit to the Hippodrome, one of the largest chariot race grounds of the Byzantine Empire, before transferring to the city's most iconic monument, the Blue Mosque. Completed in 1616 and considered a triumph of harmony, proportion, and elegance, this stunning place of worship is illuminated with natural light through 260 colorful windows, and gets its nickname from the blue Iznik tiles covering the interior.
Our last stop of the day will be the Grand Bazaar, the largest and oldest covered Bazaar in Turkey. Have fun shopping and haggling at more than 4,000 shops offering a variety of handicrafts, carpets, rare jewels, antiques, ceramics, and much more.
Approximate Length: 7 hours, 30 minutes
Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Casual attire with comfortable walking shoes. Tour includes about 4 hours of walking often over uneven surfaces. In the Blue Mosque guests must cover shoulders and knees, and women must wear a headscarf. This can be borrowed at the mosque.
