Exclusive Shore Event: Cochin (Kochi) | City Highlights with Lunch at Taj Malabar
Affectionately known as the "Queen of the Arabian Sea", Kochi is situated on the west coast of India in the beautiful state of Kerala. Rich in history, culture and archaeological treasures, Kochi also has the distinction of being the commercial capital and most cosmopolitan city in Kerala.
Our day begins with a traditional welcome of flowers and "Aarti" at the pier after which we will enjoy a guided tour of Fort Kochi starting with a visit to Mattancherry Palace, locally known as the Dutch Palace, built by the Portuguese in 1555. The palace is an architectural masterpiece with a blend of colonial and Kerala architecture and features murals depicting Hindu temple art, portraits and exhibits of the Rajas (Kings) of Kochi. We then make our way to Jew Town to visit local stores that include antiques, embroidered garments and many more.
Re-boarding our coach we drive past the famous Chinese Fishing Nets which were erected between 1350 and 1450 AD by the traders of Kublai Khan. We then visit the Church of St. Francis, the first European church set up in India and also where the famous explorer, Vasco de Gama was buried in 1524 before his body was taken back to Portugal. We will then proceed to the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, a short walk from St. Francis Church. This Cathedral is one of the eight Basilicas in India and also a heritage edifice of the state of Kerala. It is a place of worship as well as a center of historic significance with architectural and artistic grandeur of the gothic style.
Next, we attend a Kalarippayattu performance, the traditional martial art of Kerala, considered to be the oldest and most scientific in the world.
Later, we will be greeted by costumed Kathakali Dancers at the beautiful Hotel Taj Malabar where a delicious feast of local specialties and wine awaits us. The hotel is situated on Willingdon Island and has a lovely view of Kochi Harbor.
After lunch we will return to the ship.
Approximate Length: Seven hours.
