Exclusive Shore Event: Mallorca | Valldemosa, Deia and a Festive Lunch
The largest of the Balearic Islands, cosmopolitan Mallorca has spectacular scenery with rugged cliffs hugging the shoreline and mountain ranges protecting fertile plains so that the acres of olive, fig and almond trees are sheltered from the rough sea winds. Festooned with sweeping sands and tiny coves, Mallorca is a Spanish gem of pine-covered hills, sandy beaches, rugged mountains and lush green valleys where lemons and oranges glow gold on the trees.
For 2000 years, Mallorca's prime position attracted invaders. The Greeks named the islands Ballein, hence Balearics, referring to 'slingshot' fighters; the Romans planted vineyards and olive groves; the Moors brought almonds, oranges and windmills to irrigate the land. The Christians returned in the early 13th century, led by young King Jaume I, but Mallorca long remained a pirates' haunt, building its settlements a short distance inland for protection.
The day begins with a scenic drive outside of Palma to the charming village of Valldemosa, nestled in the mountains on the western part of the island. This small village is a jumble of cobbled lanes and houses with cappuccino-colored walls tottering up the sunny slopes. The light is translucent, the sky luminous blue, the place ideal for writers and composers seeking inspiration. No wonder then that Frederic Chopin and George Sand spent the romantic winter of 1838 in Valdemosa's Carthusian Monastery.
This was also the home of a local saint, Santa Catalina Thomas whose image protects every house in the alleyways. Here we'll visit the Palacio del Rey, built for the kings of the Majorcan Dynasty and the Carthusian Monastery, home to Frederic Chopin and George Sand during the winter of 1838-1839 with its beautiful gardens and 17th & 18th century Cloisters. A special private piano concert has been arranged for us inside the Palace.
Next we visit the village of Dei, one of the jewels of the Mediterranean and a must see when visiting Mallorca. Dei is located in a valley in the shadow of the Serra de Tramuntana, between Soller and Valldemossa. It has a population of 850 inhabitants and an economy based on agriculture, hand crafts, fine arts and tourism. Homes made of small Mallorcan rock rise from the valley up to the top of the hill. Urban construction is highly controlled here in order to preserve its natural charm and protect the landscape environment. The village dates back to the prehistoric era and takes it names from the Arabic word "ad daia" (hamlet), which the Arabic used to name this place during the Islamic occupation of Mallorca in the X-XIII centuries.
We will then enjoy a wonderful lunch of local and seasonal specialties at the family-owned and run Restaurante Bens D'Avall with spectacular elevated views of the north coast.
After lunch, we will make our way back to the ship.
Approximate Length: Six hours.
Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Resort casual with comfortable walking shoes recommended. There will be moderate walking and a few stairs to access the restaurant.
