Exclusive Shore Event: Walvis Bay | Highlights of Swakopmund with Festive Lunch
Today we will visit one of the oldest deserts. On our way out of town, our guide will provide valued information on the early colonial history of this area. We will drive by several crop and leisure orientated farms along the Swakop river bed. We will then enter the rugged Moon landscape. In this desolate area our guide will lead us right to the legendary Welwitschia mirabilis which is believed to have a lifespan of 2000 years, during which time it produces only two leaves. The Welwitschia plant was discovered in 1859 by Dr. Friedrich Welwitsch and has been recorded as living to 1500 years. It is the most talked about plant in the Botanical World and is considered being the Paradox of the Namib. We will also observe lichens & lithops as well as various desert-adapted flora. With some luck we may see ostrich, klipspringer, springbuck, jackal and a few of the endemic bird species.
On the return route we will travel down the Swakop River canyon, passing the old police and customs post at Goanikontes. A breathtaking view of the entire Moon landscape awaits you now. On the way back to Swakopmund, a detour to the dune belt will round off an unforgettable desert experience.
We will then proceed to the seaside resort of Swakopmund, which evokes the atmosphere of a small Bavarian type village. Swakopmund was founded in 1892 when the German Captain, Curt von Francois landed just north of the Swakop River. Lunch will be served on the beach where we will enjoy a variety of local delicacies and wine, prior to our return to the ship.
Approximate Length: Six hours
Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Casual attire with comfortable walking shoes and a light jacket. Light walking on sand dunes and the beach.
