Exclusive Shore Event: Keelung (Taipei) | National Palace Museum & Lunch
Voyager Club members will travel from the busy port of Keelung to the capital city of Taipei. The Portuguese, who first spied this "beautiful island" in the 16th century, named it Formosa. The isle has been a melting pot of cultures ever since, and no where is this more evident than in Taipei.
Our visit will begin with a guided morning exploration of the National Palace Museum. The museum is the repository of over 700,000 priceless artifacts, spanning more than 5,000 years of Chinese history. Miles of relics of past dynasties are preserved in its galleries, among them earthenware, jade, and bronze. General Chiang Kai-shek brought many of the museum's treasures here, when he fled Mainland China's Communist forces in the middle of the 20th century. Outside the palace museum is a spectacular garden, Chi-Shan. Its designer, Wang Hsi-chih, was determined to recreate the most elegant of Chinese gardens.
Prior to lunch we'll also explore the Martyr's Shrine, which is nestled between the flowing waters of the Keelung River and the rise of the Chingshan Mountains, and Presidential Square, home to the sprawling complex of the Presidential Office Building. Martyr's Shrine, dedicated to the 330,000 men who perished in the Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War, was built in 1969 in the style of the Taihe Dian Imperial Palace in Beijing's Forbidden City. The red and white Presidential Office Building was built during the Japanese colonization, and has only recently been opened for public tours. The common uses of "red" and diverse architectural styles are quite interesting.
Taiwan's cuisine is blessed with the confluence of cultures from China's many provinces. Here spicy Sichuan, meticulously prepared Cantonese, the smoky rich flavors of Hunan, and the silky textures of Beijing await your palate. Lunch will be a banquet celebration of the best each has to offer at one of the city's finest venues.
Approximate Length: Seven hours.
Suggested Attire: Casual wear with comfortable shoes and light to moderate walking.
PLEASE NOTE: All Virtuoso events ashore are capacity controlled and require a minimum number of participants to operate. Events are subject to change without notice.
