Exclusive Shore Event: Kusadasi | Ghosts of Antiquity

Our port of Kusadasi is a pleasant fishing village and resort on the Turkish Aegean, but it's perhaps best known as the gateway to the Greco-Roman ruins at Ephesus. Once home to 300,000 people, this sunny metropolis flourished between 600 BC and AD 500, and has been painstakingly excavated and restored.
Before we even arrive to Ephesus, we'll stop to visit the House of the Virgin Mary. This lovely chapel is tucked in the hills behind the ancient site and is thought to be the place where Mary lived the last years of her life. Arriving at Ephesus, we will enjoy a private walking tour, beginning along the Royal Road, also known as the Arcadian Way, a 100-foot-wide, fourth-century white marble chariot thoroughfare that stretched from the harbor to the city's theater. We'll see the Library of Celsus, with its hauntingly beautiful two-story faade; the structure once held around 10,000 parchment and papyri documents. Another landmark of Ephesus is the great theater, which provided perfect acoustics for performances. The diameter of this immense hall was 495 feet, and it had 22 tiers and could accommodate 25,000 spectators[Office1] [JS2] [JS3] . And though it's in nearly complete ruins today, the Temple of Artemis, once four times the size of the Parthenon, is still impressive.
One highlight of our day at Ephesus will be exclusive access to the recently discovered Yamac Terrace houses, a fascinating archeological site that is currently being excavated.[Office4] [JS5] . Once the dwellings of Roman aristocracy, they show beautifully preserved and colorful mosaics.
Following our day at the site we'll transfer to Kismet Hotel, overlooking Kusadasi Harbor, for a feast of local meze and other specialties. After lunch, we'll have the option of shopping in town before heading back to the ship.

Approximate Length: 6 hours, 30 minutes

Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Light, casual attire with comfortable walking shoes with non-slip soles. Sunscreen, hats, and/or umbrellas are highly recommended. This tour includes at least two hours of walking outdoors with steps, cobblestones, and uneven surfaces. It is not recommended for people with walking difficulties or requiring the use of a wheelchair.

PLEASE NOTE: All Virtuoso events ashore are capacity controlled and require a minimum number of participants to operate. Events are subject to change without notice. These events are individually tailored for each date and arrival. Your event could be different than what is noted here; but it will be designed to be memorable and to bring you a traveler's view that you will treasure, and would otherwise miss entirely. Final details will be outlined in program letters provided by your Virtuoso host aboard ship.
