Exclusive Shore Event: Bordeaux | Highlights of Bordeaux and Wine Tasting with Lunch
Our day in Bordeaux begins in the morning, where we will be met by our capable guide at the ship. We will first enjoy a walking tour of the city, focusing on the close historical relationship between the United States and France. On our tour, we will follow in the footsteps of famous explorers, philosophers, and revolutionaries. Jacques Cartier's early expeditions across the Atlantic and into the New World began in Bordeaux, and the city was once home to Thomas Jefferson before he became America's 3rd President. Marquis de Lafayette, who played an instrumental role in both the American and French revolutions, departed from here to a young United States of America.
During the tour, we will have the opportunity to discover the city and its stunning 18th century architecture, itself listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. The 1700 and 1800's were regarded as the city's golden age, being the port between the New World and mainland France. Perhaps even more beautiful than the city itself, the countryside outside of Bordeaux boasts countless vineyards and picturesque villages. A quick 20-minute drive will take us to the beautiful Grand Cru Classé Wine property, where we will find Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte.
We will enjoy an extraordinary French country lunch in an elegant hall built entirely out of wood. After lunch, we will make our way to the cellar of the chateau and enjoy some of the best local wines in what is considered by many to be the most beautiful cellar in the Bordeaux region. Finally, we will re-board the coach to transfer back to the ship.
Approximate Length: Seven hours
Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Smart casual wear is recommended. There will be moderate to heavy walking on the tour, mostly on paved or gently sloped surfaces.
