Exclusive Shore Event: Puntarenas | Scarlet Macaws, Chomping Crocs, and Sustainable Crops
Long known for its impressive wildlife, Costa Rica has become a hotbed for sustainability as well. An hour's drive south from Puntarenas lies the Guacalillo Estuary, where we board pontoon boats for an eco-jungle cruise. The estuary's mangrove forests provide critical habitat for numerous endemic birds including cuckoos, hummingbirds, Panama flycatchers, and dazzling scarlet macaws. Have your binocs ready to spot herons, gulls, storks, pelicans and other sea- and shorebirds along the Trcoles River, whose banks are home to huge colonies of crocodiles. Sightings of these fierce reptiles are guaranteed, and we get a front-row seat for all the action.
Enjoy some fresh fruit before transferring to Macaw Lodge, a totally off-the-grid eco-lodge and conservation pioneer. A tour of the property reveals such innovative sustainability practices as vermiculture (worm composting) and aquaculture, used to produce cacao, coffee, acai, and other crops. Sample a few during our tasty lunch before the 1.5-hour drive back to port.
Approximate Length: 8 hours
Suggested Attire: Casual attire with good outdoor shoes and sun protection; insect repellent highly recommended. The boat ride is accessible to wheelchair guests, although the lodge tour is not.
PLEASE NOTE: All Virtuoso events ashore are capacity controlled and require a minimum number of participants to operate. Events are subject to change without notice. These events are individually tailored for each date and arrival. Your event could be different than what is noted here; but it will be designed to be memorable and to bring you a traveler's view that you will treasure, and would otherwise miss entirely. Final details will be outlined in program letters provided by your Virtuoso host aboard ship.
