Exclusive Shore Event: Osaka | Dramatic Castle, Dazzling Neon
Japan's third-largest city is known for its incredible street eats, infectious energy, and iconic Osaka Castle. Begin the day with an exploration of this formidable stronghold, which towers 130 feet above its surrounding park and moat. The original 16th-century castle was destroyed by a lightning strike in 1665; the current structure, built in 1931, houses an impressive collection of art, armor, and other artifacts. Seventeenth-century stone walls, turrets, and secondary citadels dot the peaceful grounds; 600 cherry trees make it a favorite spot for hanami (cherry blossom viewing) in early April.
Following our tour, it's time for lunch at Takimi Koji: this "retro restaurant alley" located beneath the Umeda Sky Building replicates a 1920s Japanese townscape. Afterward, head up to the Floating Garden Observatory, a rooftop deck that connects Umeda's twin, 40-story skyscrapers and offers breathtaking views. Our final stop is Dotonbori; considered the heart of Osaka, this popular area is dense with neon-lit eateries and entertainment venues. Soak in the lively atmosphere and sample some street food before returning to the ship.
Approximate Length: 7 hours
Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Casual attire with comfortable walking shoes. Expect moderate walking over some uneven surfaces with numerous steps.
