Exclusive Shore Event: Bridgetown | Historical Highlights of Barbados with a Festive Lunch

The island of Barbados, discovered by the Portuguese but settled by the British, offers a rich air of English traditions fragranced with a sweet dose of Caribbean spice. Today's adventure affords us the opportunity to inhale some of Barbados' treasures. After a warm welcome by our cordial guide, we will depart from Bridgetown in the morning for a peek into Barbados' rich history and natural beauty.
Nestled in lush vegetation and built in 1818, Gun Hill Signal Station, our first stop, is part of a chain of signal stations established to secure the island and disseminate information related to shipping. Today, it is fully restored and landscaped. At 700 feet above sea level, this spot offers one of the most distinctive views of Barbados. After enjoying the remarkable views, we'll depart for a visit to the former residence of America's first president.
On the journey through St. George Valley, we'll pass the Bussa roundabout, which embodies a sculpture symbolizing the "Breaking of Chains" by Bussa, a slave rebellion leader who inspired a local revolt against slavery in 1816. While the people of Barbados are today famous for their friendly and welcoming attitude, the island once employed a massive amount of slave labor dedicated to sugar production.
It is a little-known fact that the only time George Washington left America was for a visit to Barbados. He and his brother were accommodated at what was then known as 'Cogan', a Georgian style home set on the Garrison Ridge. The residence, then known as Bush Hill House, has been lovingly restored as a typical plantation house of the mid-18th century, as it would have appeared during the Washington brothers' stay. Pine floors, Turkish carpets, and Royal Creamware china coupled with mahogany, oak, and cherry-wood antiques beautifully re-create the atmosphere of the period.
After the tour, we'll be hosted for lunch at Champers Restaurant. Right on the water's edge, the restaurant offers a surprisingly extensive menu bound to please the most discerning palate. The truly international wine list offers the perfect paring for our delicious Caribbean-themed lunch.
After our meal, we will transfer back to the port.
Approximatel Length: Five hours, 30 minutes

Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Comfortable, casual wear is recommended. There will be little walking over short distances, with limited steps or inclines.

PLEASE NOTE: All Virtuoso events ashore are capacity controlled and require a minimum number of participants to operate. Events are subject to change without notice. Your event could be different than what is noted here; but it will be designed to be memorable and to bring you a traveler's view that you will treasure, and would otherwise miss entirely.
