Exclusive Shore Event: Puntarenas | Guacalillo Estuary, Jardin Pura Vida Botanical Garden, and Lunch

Costa Rica's 801 miles of coastline on the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean are gorgeous, even Eden-like, but its tropical rain forests are pure heaven.  Nearly 31% of the country is covered in rain forest vegetation.  More than 70 inches of rain fall each year on rain forest lands.  The habitats are so lush that a four-square-mile area could contain as many as 750 species of trees, 125 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, and 100 species of reptiles.

Leaving the pier we will have an hour drive along Costa Rica's coastline where we will embark on a boat to sail along the Guacalillo estuary and the Tarcoles River, located near Carara National Park. The Guacalillo estuary is noted for its mangrove forests, with four different species of mangrove that can be found in this area: Tea, black, red and white mangrove. The mangroves are a great habitat for many endemic birds like the cuckoo, hummingbirds, vireo, panama flycatcher and many herons and egrets.  This particular mangrove forest is one of the most important in the mid-Pacific Coast for the conservation of the scarlet macaw. While this endangered species of bird spends most of the day in the forest, they roost in the mangroves. The Trcoles River mouth is considered by birdwatchers to be one of the richest sites for sea birds and shorebirds, specifically during the migration from October through April.  The river shores house a wide variety of reptiles as well one of the largest colonies of crocodiles.  As we cruise down the river, this adventure will provide a great understanding of the life of the mangrove and its species.  More importantly, you will learn about their existence and why we must preserve the mangrove forests as a way of conservation to save all living species on Earth.

Later we will continue to Jardin Pura Vida, a botanical garden nestled on 45 acres of tropical forest with paved pathways that meander through millions of flowering plants bringing the diverse, beautiful flora of Costa Rica right to you. At an elevation of 2,000 feet Jardin Pura Vida offers spectacular views of the coastline and surrounding mountains. Costa Rica's tallest waterfall is located here as well as two naturally spring-fed creeks that course through the property. Jardin Pura Vida is also a rescue center for the Carara National Park that includes Lapas, Toucans and Parrots.

After our visit, we will enjoy a delicious lunch of local specialties at the Adventure Dining location that overlooks the waterfalls.  We will return to the pier by approximately 4:00pm.

Approximate Length: Seven hours, 30 minutes.

Suggested Attire: Casual wear, light jacket or sweater, hat and comfortable closed-toe shoes. Moderate walking on uneven surfaces and steps. Bring sunscreen..

PLEASE NOTE: All Virtuoso events ashore are capacity controlled and require a minimum number of participants to operate. Events are subject to change without notice. These events are individually tailored for each date and arrival. Your event could be different than what is noted here; but it will be designed to be memorable and to bring you a traveler's view that you will treasure, and would otherwise miss entirely. Final details will be outlined in program letters provided by your Virtuoso host aboard ship.
