The history of Cartagena de Indias, a walled fortress city in the Spanish colony of New Granada, is legendary. Its location, on the Caribbean coast of present-day Colombia (the colony of New Granada became part of the federation of Gran Colombia, and eventually in 1886 the Republic of Colombia), was key to the shipment of riches between the New World and Spain. Its "lucrative nature" was not lost on the pirates and privateers of the colonial Americas.
We will begin our tour with a drive up the narrow, winding roads to the magnificent La Popa Monastery rising nearly 500 feet high above the city. The monastery is situated at the peak of the Cerro de La Popa and offers dazzling views of the city and harbor. We will also visit the Chapel of Our Lady of the Candle which is located on the top of La Popa Hill. Both the monastery and chapel were built at the beginning of the 17th century by the Augustinian Priests.
We then continue with a photo stop at the San Felipe de Barajas Fortress, a military architectural masterpiece built during the Spanish Colonial period. This fortress was the key element in the defense of Cartagena during the attack carried out by British Admiral Vernon.
Next, we head toward the Old City, and stroll down its beautiful colonial streets adorned by breathtaking balconies overflowing with flowers. We will pass by the Plaza de Bolivar, the Cathedral, the Palace of the Inquisition and finally, by the Plaza and Church of Saint Peter Claver. After the walk, we board the coach and depart for the historic Santa Clara Hotel, which used to be an old convent dating from beginning of the 17th Century, to enjoy a festive dinner of local specialties.
We will return to the pier by 9:00pm.
Approximate Length: Six hours.
Suggested Attire:Elegant casual with comfortable shoes. Moderate walking on uneven surfaces and some steps.
