Our day begins with a transit through the buzzing little metropolis of San Miguel de Cozumel, Cozumel's only town. San Miguel, with its safe streets, great food and family oriented culture offers a remarkable opportunity to experience a vibrant Mexican-Mayan community firsthand, and exudes a laid back elegance combining the charming remnants of colonial Mexico with the conveniences of modern life. We'll see its heart and soul, the zocalo, or center plaza as it is officially known, El Parque Benito Juarez and the main church La Iglesia de San Miguel. More than 100 years ago on September 29th, the holy day of San Miguel, farmers digging in a field found a beautiful ivory statue of St. Michael the Archangel brandishing a gold sword and crown and took this as a sign to name the church and town San Miguel. Today the church remains the central meeting point for Cozumelenos.
Our transit continues around the island, admiring the magnificent beaches on the leeward side heading towards a lesser known but very interesting site, San Gervasio. Located in the heart of the island, this sacred Mayan archeological site was dedicated to the goddess Ixchel, deity of midwifery and fertility and women from the inland Mayan settlements made pilgrimages here at some point in their life.
After our visit we will move on to Pancho's Backyard where we'll feast on regional Mexican snacks complimented by the best flavored Margaritas and other drinks on the lush patio amidst splashing fountains, serenaded by the festive jingle of the marimba. After, if time allows, we'll have the option of returning directly to the ship, or perhaps a stroll among the many shops. Those guests who choose to stay in town will be responsible for making their own way back to the ship.
