Exclusive Shore Event: Ajaccio | Aromatherapy of Corsica
Wild maquis, the fragrant shrub of Corsica's hills, is deeply ingrained in the island's character; it is said that Napoleon Bonaparte swore he could smell the scent of his birthplace while in exile on Elba Island. Our discovery of Corsica's aromas takes us up winding roads among the stirring hills above Ajaccio to the workshop of brothers Paul and Jean-Pierre Caux; here at La Maison des Senteurs ("The House of Fragrances"), we learn about the process of distilling aromatic herbs into organic essential oils, performed with a passion and skill that has made the brothers into ambassadors for Corsica's olfactory production. The distillery features a panoramic terrace that the Prunelli River as it flows down to the sea. After a lunch of Corsican cuisine, return to Ajaccio's charming old town for a walking tour through its winding, narrow streets; stop to visit the 16th-century Cathédrale d'Ajaccio, where Napoleon was baptized in 1771.
Approximate Length: 5 hours
