"Those who seek paradise on earth," George Bernard Shaw once wrote, "should come to Dubrovnik." Today he might add that Dubrovnik is the place for all those who wish to renew themselves and their faith in human nature. Driving by coach to the Pile Gate, guests find themselves at the beginning of the famous main street - the Stradun. Along the way, you will see, among other places, the Onofrious Fountain and the Franciscans and Rector's Palace. You will have free time for exploring the town on your own and for shopping. After spending some time in Dubrovnik, you continue your ride through the chain of villages toward the picturesque Konavle Valley where a local family extends a welcome of local brandy and dried figs in their typical country home. The family has lived here for generations producing grape brandy, olive oil and wine in the traditional way. Visiting their house and property you will have a unique opportunity to see and appreciate how these people have lived in this area throughout the centuries. After strolling through the wine cellars and olive press we will enter a large dining room, where our gracious host will serve a light repast of local specialties including grilled meat, local cheese, smoked ham and homemade bread. While enjoying the meal including local wine, you will be entertained with typical Dalmatian music and songs performed by a group of local musicians/singers. Please note: Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes for this tour which involves moderate walking and approximately 35 steps to climb. Latin America
Any trip to Rio de Janeiro should include seeing the famous Copacabana area and Sugarloaf Mountain. Traveling from the pier and downtown commercial district, you'll enjoy a drive to exotic Praia Vermelha, also referred to as Red Beach and located near Urca Hill, the first ascent on your way to the summit of Sugar Loaf. The Sugar Loaf, or Po de Aucar, rises as a massive granite cone at the entrance of Guanabara Bay. Upon arriving at the cable car station, you'll board one of the cars for the short climb up the 650 ft. to the top of Urca Hill, where shops and restaurants are tucked amongst beautiful shady gardens. The second phase of your journey involves a breathtaking ride to the 1,200 ft. summit of Sugar Loaf. From high atop the mountain, the bird's eye view of the city and surrounding beaches is simply stunning. Tour participants have the choice of traveling on both rides all the way to the top, or the faint-hearted may choose to remain on the middle level and enjoy the views from that vantage point. Descending back to the base of the mountain, you'll re-join your coach and travel through one of the city's residential areas, en route to Copacabana, Rio's widely celebrated stretch of crescent beach. Set against a backdrop of towering skyscraper apartment buildings, this vibrant area of Rio that never seems to rest, is a must-see for visitors. Your tour will also travel past the neighboring beach areas of Leme and Ipanema before making your way back to the pier. Please note: This tour is not recommended for those who have a fear of heights. Lightweight clothing and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Alaska
Embrace the unique flavors, culture and people of Alaska during this memorable epicurean experience in Ketchikan. Depart the pier for the drive to an intimate private clubroom overlooking the harbor. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your host, get settled in and hear colorful stories highlighting Ketchikan's people, culture and lifestyle. Next, you will be served a five-course tasting menu consisting of spot prawns, and king and dungeness crabs. Your personal chef will prepare and serve your meal, and share their secret methods of brining, roasting, smoking and grilling seafood. Following your visit, you will walk back to the ship with the recipes and knowledge to duplicate your meal for family and friends once you have returned home. |
