Exclusive Shore Event: Montevideo, Uruguay | Montevideo Overview and Winery Lunch

Uruguay's long reputation of neutrality and trade has earned it the nickname "Little Switzerland". Rich with European heritage, its capital, Montevideo, reflects the cultures of early settlers from Spain, Portugal, and Italy, particularly in its architecture and outlook. The city is a treasury of fine old buildings, combined with an active port and comfortable residential districts, all set along the curving beaches of the Rio de la Plata.

Departing the Old City, the morning drive will provide an overview of Montevideo, including some of its historical highlights as well as its 19th century colonial architecture. Among the sights we will pass are the Graf Spee Monument, the Plaza Independencia and the Palacio Legislativo, reputed to be among the three most beautiful Parliament buildings in the world, as well as the Batlle y Odonez Park.

We will have the opportunity to visit the Solis Theater, one of Uruguay's oldest theaters. It was built in 1856 and is currently owned by the government of Montevideo. Located in the Old City, the Solis Theater has many similarities to the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan just to name a few.

After, we will pass through the Prado neighborhood, a residential neighborhood of mansions on tree lined streets built in the early 20th century, before moving north for a visit to the Carrau Winery. The Carrau Winery is a major exporter of Uruguayan wines located in the Colon area. The winery was constructed in 1894 in a colonial style and has an ancient cave of granite, all surrounded by green parks. Carrau is an exclusive winery which produces 70,000 bottles of fine wine per year. We will be greeted by the owners of the winery who will take us on a tour and a special wine tasting. Following the wine tasting a typical lunch of "Asado", awaits us. Accompanying the luncheon will be a folkloric show featuring traditional music and dance.

We will return to the ship, driving along the riverfront that distinguishes Montevideo from any other capital city.

Approximate Length: Six hours.

Dress Code/Walking Notes: Dress casually with comfortable shoes. Light to moderate walking required.

PLEASE NOTE: All Virtuoso events ashore are capacity controlled and require a minimum number of participants to operate. Events are subject to change without notice. These events are individually tailored for each date and arrival. Your event could be different than what is noted here; but it will be designed to be memorable and to bring you a traveler's view that you will treasure, and would otherwise miss entirely. Final details will be outlined in program letters provided by your Virtuoso host aboard ship.
