Exclusive Shore Event: Valletta | Medieval Walls and Palatial Splendor
Our day of discovery on this Mediterranean crossroads begins with a drive from Valletta to the The Wignacourt Collegiate Museum in Rabat, a baroque residence of the Chaplains of the Knights of Malta. The museum has a fine picture gallery with Maltese as well as European artists, plus sculptures, maps, rare books, and other interesting artifacts. Of particular interest is the subterranean level with its labyrinth of Punic, Roman, and Christian hypogea, as well as World War II shelters.
Afterwards, we'll make our way to the medieval fortified city of Mdina, the capital of Malta until the 16th century and a superb example of a typical medieval town. Mdina is believed to be the seventh city on this site, the first of which was founded perhaps as long ago as 6,000 years. The city is still confined within its walls, and has a population of about 320.
We'll continue to the quaint village of Naxxar and the magnificent Palazzo Parisio & Gardens, the private estate of the Scicluna family. Sometimes described as a "mini Versailles," the property shows the luxurious standards afforded to Maltese nobility in the early twentieth century, with a lavish baroque interior and manicured gardens. We will have a short viewing of the main rooms, before our delicious feast of traditional Maltese specialties accompanied by local wines. Weather permitting, we will dine al fresco.
Approximate Length: 6 hours, 30 minutes
Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Smart casual wear with a sun hat and comfortable shoes. Women are not permitted to enter Malta's churches in sleeveless shirts. Moderate walking on cobblestone streets and uneven surfaces.
