Exclusive Shore Event: Ajaccio | Museum Fesch and Discovering Bees with Corsican Lunch
Ajaccio is Corsica's largest town, retaining the image of a typical French Mediterranean resort with palm trees, street cafés and a marina full of yachts from around the world. Set in a magnificent bay with a shadowy mountain range as a scenic backdrop, its first image is of yellow-toned buildings and a majestic citadel.
We will be met on the pier and our first stop is a few steps away from the ship. This morning we will open for you the doors of the very reputable museum Fesch before the general admission.
In the heart of Ajaccio lies Palais Fesch, and in that building, is the Musée Fesch displaying the painting collection amassed by Cardinal Joseph Fesch (1763-1839).
The Musée Fesch has acquired an international reputation through its impressive panorama of Italian paintings it has examples from all the regions and schools in Italy from the 14th century up to the 18th century. In France, it has the largest and most important collection of Italian paintings outside the Louvre. Our guide will give us a very interesting Masterpieces tour.
From there we will discover from the outside Napoleon's birthplace, a large and simple residence home now a museum devoted to the Bonaparte family in Corsica.
It is then time to enjoy a scenic drive and an early lunch to sample a traditional Corsican meal featuring some of the famous Corsican honey. Bees and honey will be the main subject of your afternoon!
Bees have been an important part of Corsican life and important symbol used by Corsica's most famous son, Napoleon Bonaparte. Symbol of immortality and resurrection, the bee was chosen to link the Napoleonic dynasty to the early origins of France. Golden bees (in fact, cicadas) were discovered in 1653 in Tournai in the tomb of Childeric I, founder of the Merovingian dynasty in 457AD and father of Clovis. Bees were considered the oldest emblem and symbol of the sovereigns of France.
We will depart to a very special place, Le Jardin des Abeilles (the garden of bees). We will be hosted there by Denis Casalta, who lives in this beautiful garden where he will tell us about the management and production of honeybees, bumble bees and queens and the famous Corsican honey that they produce.
We will then drive back to Ajaccio and return to the pier.
