Exclusive Shore Event: Livorno | Tuscan Truffles and the Original Renaissance Man
Less than an hour's drive from port lies San Miniato, a lovely hilltop town in the heart of Tuscany. A favorite stop along the ancient Via Francigena pilgrim route, San Miniato is packed with lavish palaces and churches, although its most famous treasure is the local white truffle. A guided tour reveals Romanesque structures, frescoes, colorful Piazza del Popolo, and 14th-century church of San Domenico with its unfinished facade. Take time to explore on your own, perhaps climbing the 100-foot-high Tower of Federico for panoramic views, or shopping for local pottery and truffle oil.
We regroup in the center of town at lively Pepenero restaurant to dine on the chef's innovative fare made with local products, such as Angus beef carpaccio and ravioli with spinach and truffles. Reboard our coach for the drive to the small hamlet of Vinci, birthplace of Leonardo - the legendary artist, physicist, technologist, and engineer. Museo Leonardiano exhibits more than 80 models of his ingenious inventions, reconstructed from Leonardo's personal drawings; nearby stands the 15th-century farmhouse where he was born.
Approximate Length: 7 hours, 30 minutes
Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Casual attire with comfortable walking shoes. Includes some steps and uneven surfaces.
