A place exists in Alaska where the past lives on, where the cries of "gold in the Yukon" still echo from steep canyon walls and where the sounds of barroom pianos and boomtown crowds ring out in the night. It's a place where the romance and excitement of yesteryear linger around every street corner and every bend in the trail. That place is beautiful and historic Skagway!
Our day begins with an introductory drive through Skagway's Historic district, home of the Klondike National Historic Park. We will learn about the Gold Rush of 1898, when thousands of gold-crazed miners flocked to Skagway on their way to the Klondike. We will continue through town and cross the Skagway River then climb above the town for a scenic overview of Skagway and the rugged Chilkoot Mountains.
After the town tour and opportunity for photos, we will arrive at the Historic Skagway Inn. Built in 1897, the Inn first operated first as a brothel, a family residence, a boarding house and now as a frontier country inn.
The lunch portion of this event begins with an intimate Alaskan culinary experience with a Chef-guided hunt for edibles and flowers from the Inn's award-winning kitchen garden. Once inside, you will have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on cooking experience, preparing and tasting a four-course meal. A typical presentation features exotic baby greens, smoked salmon farfalle pasta, fresh halibut chowder and Baked Alaska. The cuisine varies to showcase seafood and produce in season. Enjoy wine pairings, Alaska roasted coffee, herbal tea, or other non-alcoholic beverages. Take home all the delicious recipes and an Alaska wildflower seed packet to begin your Alaska garden at home.
Approximate Length: Four hours.
Suggested Attire: Casual wear that is warm (we suggest dressing in layers) with a rainproof jacket and comfortable shoes. Moderate walking. The walk to the waterfall is uphill and unpaved but not difficult.
PLEASE NOTE: All Virtuoso events ashore are capacity controlled and require a minimum number of participants to operate. Events are subject to change without notice. These events are individually tailored for each date and arrival. Your event could be different than what is noted here; but it will be designed to be memorable and to bring you a traveler's view that you will treasure, and would otherwise miss entirely. Final details will be outlined in program letters provided by your Virtuoso host aboard ship.
