Exclusive Shore Event: Hong Kong | Chi Lin Nunnery & Nan Lian Gardens and Festive Lunch
We begin our day with a visit to the Chi Lin Nunnery & Nan Lian Gardens. A multi-tiered Tang-dynasty style building, the nunnery was built around 1930, but recently restored at a cost of 90 million Hong Kong dollars. The largest timber construction complex in the People's Republic of China was put together without the use of a single nail! This innovative, mainly handcrafted structure is unprecedented in the architectural history of Hong Kong. The Nunnery was built according to the principles of Tang Buddhist architecture, which is famous for its classical magnificence, simple elegance and fine details. The nunnery is still used by a few nuns who run religious, educational and social services, but is now mainly a tourist attraction.
One of the highlights of the nunnery visit is the Nan Lian Garden which is a beautiful realization of a traditional Chinese garden. Chinese garden tradition is deeply rooted in Daoism which is based on the philosophical ideal of "nature". A Chinese garden strives to achieve harmony and in order to do so the garden must contain four essential elements: water, rocks, plants, and architectural structures the union or harmony of man and nature. The Nan Lian garden is a perfect realization of this philosophical concept.
Our next stop will be at the Observation Deck at International Commerce Centre. The International Commerce Center (ICC) Observation Deck is the highest deck in Hong Kong, offering a panoramic view of Hong Kong and Victoria Harbour from the heart of the city. It has multi-media exhibits to tell visitors about the local history and culture, plus a resource center providing comprehensive tourist information.
Next we will visit the Aberdeen fishing village where we will board a motorized sampan to cruise around the floating Tanka community. Sampans are the traditional ancient Chinese sailing vessels made of teakwood and are still in use today.
Later we will make our way to the Aberdeen Marina Club where we will enjoy a delicious dim sum lunch, accompanied by wine and beer and some local entertainment.
After lunch, we will make our way back to the ship.
PLEASE NOTE: All Virtuoso events ashore are capacity controlled and require a minimum number of participants to operate. Events are subject to change without notice. Your event could be different than what is noted here; but it will be designed to be memorable and to bring you a traveler's view that you will treasure, and would otherwise miss entirely. Final details will be outlined in program letters provided by your Virtuoso host aboard ship.
