Exclusive Shore Event: Valparaiso, Chili | Wine, Equestrian Show & Lunch
Lying 74 miles west of Santiago, Valparaiso is Chile's principal port and second-largest city. Despite its size, it is Chile's most distinctive city and one of South America's most intriguing. Chile's Pacific Coast is dominated by two neighboring but quite different cities of Valparaiso and Via del Mar, 85 miles outside from Santiago, through the coastal mountain range. Valparaiso is a historic port and university town, famous for its labyrinth hills, which are covered in quaint, colorful old houses and accessible only by a steep climb or by the city's unique system of funicular railways. There has never been a better time to visit Chile's chief port, in view of the city's recent award by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Via del Mar is a far more modern town, famous for its gardens and flower clock.
Depart the city for the Casablanca Valley region and a visit to Casas del Bosque Vineyard. Our visit will include a tour of the winery and cellars and a tasting of superb award winning red and white wines, including their Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2004. A selection of dried fruits and cheeses will be served to accompany the wines during the tasting.
Then continue to the equestrian center Puro Caballo to experience the country side Chilean traditions and where the Chilean "huaso" (cowboy) and the Chilean horse are the protagonists. You will be greeted by the ranch's owners and treated to a welcome cocktail including 'empanaditas' (turnover) and pisco sour, along with folk music and Chilean dance demonstrations. Visit the stables where specialized personnel will explain the roots and the morphology of the Chilean horse, whose genealogy is the oldest in South America. You will also be able to feed and enjoy the beauty of the horses.
Afterwards, enjoy an equestrian show which will include rein handling and barrel racing. You will admire the abilities of the Chilean "huaso" as he manages his horse.
Lunch today will consist of a typical Chilean lunch based on traditional Chilean dishes among other specialties accompanied with fresh salads and excellent Chilean wines. After lunch we will have a short visit to the Chilean handicraft store of the Equestrian Centre, complete with merchandise coming from different parts of the country before we return to the ship.
