Exclusive Shore Event: Tallinn | Old Tallinn, Folk Show, and Lunch
Tallinn is a quintessential medieval city fortified walls, 13th-century buildings, cobblestone streets on Estonia's Baltic coast. The Ests are ethnic and linguistic cousins of the Finns. The Finns never ruled Estonia, but virtually all of Estonia's other neighbors have "colonized" the republic in the last millennium. The saga is varied: first came the Danes (who founded Tallinn), then in the 16th century the Swedes arrived (they imposed the Lutheran Reformation), the Poles followed (and monopolized the 17th century), and finally the Russians arrived (they first laid claim in the 18th century, departed in the early 20th century and then came back in 1939). True independence was not achieved until 1991.
Despite all of these "colonial" influences, few places in Europe have managed to retain the aura of the 14th and 15th centuries as well as Tallinn. We begin our Voyager Club day in Old Town. We'll wander the winding cobbled streets, admire the soaring spires, and stand in awe of the huge defensive walls. In the Upper Town, also known as Cathedral Hill, we'll visit the Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevksy Cathedral, the Gothic Lutheran Church, and Toompea Castle. The castle was built in 1219, and is the seat of the Estonian government. The view of the Lower Town is spectacular.
As we descend along the Long and Short Leg Streets, we'll explore the Town Hall, the 15th-century apothecary shop, the medieval guildhalls, and Holy Ghost Church. An Estonian feast follows at one of Tallinn's finest restaurants. Local fare will be complemented with fine European wines. We'll also be treated to a performance of live folk music, which will include a rendition of a portion of the nearly 150-year-old national epic, Kalevipoeg.
Enjoy a brief visit to the medieval apothecary shop that was first mentioned in written documents in 1422 (before Columbus discovered America). Here you can see authentic 15th century interiors of a medieval medical center and hear the guide telling you about the most effective medicine of that time. You'll be also offered a glass of famous "love-potion".
Following our luncheon at one of the city's finest establishments, we'll visit St. Catherine's Arts and Crafts Center. Here artisans create beautiful and unusual objects. There will be some free time to explore the open air market. En route back to the ship, we'll pass the festival grounds at Kadriorg Park and the quaint Pirita Marina that hosts annual international regattas.
Approximate Length: 6 hours 30 minutes.
Suggested Attire: Casual wear with comfortable shoes. Moderate walking, includes stairways, cobblestone streets, and uneven surfaces for two to three hours with breaks.
PLEASE NOTE: All Virtuoso events ashore are capacity controlled and require a minimum number of participants to operate. Events are subject to change without notice. These events are individually tailored for each date and arrival. Your event could be different than what is noted here; but it will be designed to be memorable and to bring you a traveler's view that you will treasure, and would otherwise miss entirely. Final details will be outlined in program letters provided by your Virtuoso host aboard ship.
