Exclusive Shore Event: Tallinn | From Hansa Roots, a New Republic is Born

Our day in Tallinn's historic center begins with a drive to Upper Town and Palace Square to see the onion-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Toompea Castle, home of the Riigikogu (Estonian parliament). Continue on foot along Long Leg Street down to the Nun's Tower, one of the entrances to Tallinn's medieval defensive walls; here, we begin our guided tour through the UNESCO-designated Old Town. Wander the cobblestone streets past secret courtyards and high-gabled red roofs, pausing at a typical guild house for coffee and cake while enjoying a folkloric dance performance.
Continue to Town Hall Square, surrounded by well-preserved merchant houses built during the height of the Hanseatic League. Spend some time browsing the craft shops along St. Catherine's Passage before lunch; then it's back on the coach for a short drive to the Ajaloomuuseum or Estonian History Museum. Within the museum complex we find the 17th-century Maarjame Palace, which houses an innovative exhibition spotlighting Estonian life from the Republic's founding in 1918 through today; a collection of discarded Soviet-era monuments lay scattered about the grounds. Our return to the ship includes a final stop at the popular Pirita marina for panoramic views of the 15th-century St. Bridget's Convent ruins.

Approximate Length: 6 hours

Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Casual attire with comfortable walking shoes. Moderate walking for about 2 hours in the Old Town, mostly over smooth surface. The coach will be available for those guests who do not wish to walk from Upper to Lower Towns. There are steps to the Russian Orthodox Church. Expect around 50 minutes of walking at the Maarjame Palace. This tour is not recommended for guests who have difficulty walking or doing so for long periods of time.

PLEASE NOTE: All Virtuoso events ashore are capacity controlled and require a minimum number of participants to operate. Events are subject to change without notice. These events are individually tailored for each date and arrival. Your event could be different than what is noted here; but it will be designed to be memorable and to bring you a traveler's view that you will treasure, and would otherwise miss entirely. Final details will be outlined in program letters provided by your Virtuoso host aboard ship.
