Exclusive Shore Event: Cairns | Wetherby Station - Authentic Australian Cattle Station Experience
Welcome to Wetherby Station! You are invited to visit and experience an authentic Australian cattle station in the hinterland of Cairns. Wetherby (originally Weatherboards) was established in 1878. Built by William and Elizabeth Groves, it has been renowned for fine hospitality in the bushman's unique Australian style.
Today Wetherby Station operates as a sustainable cattle and ecotourism enterprise. Accredited commercial Droughtmaster herd graze the improved and natural pastures.
The property straddles two bio-regions, the Wet Tropics and the Einasleigh Uplands. Wetherby Station has a unique range of environments ranging from rainforest to Savannah grasslands and bush. The property has a typical savannah landscape open woodland with a grassy understory. The significant watercourses of Little Mitchell River, Rifle Creek and Spear Creek run through Wetherby, providing ideal habitats for many species of birds, reptiles, frogs and mammals including platypus, agile wallabies and grey kangaroo.
On the way to Wetherby Station, approximately an hour and a half drive from Cairns, we will enjoy a brief stop at the historic Mt Molloy Pub for a refreshing drink.
On arrival, we will have a chance to enjoy a demonstration and tasting of Billy Tea & Damper, a traditional Australian camping cuisine. The station owner, John will provide us a brief history of Wetherby Station and the part it has played in the history of the cattle industry in Far North Australia.
Afterwards, sit back and be entertained by a horse and cattle show that includes a cattle demonstration with the station's Droughtmaster bullocks and stock horses.
We will then move to the historic homestead for a short tour and drinks prior to lunch on the verandahs. Lunch will feature local specialties accompanied by a selection of beer and wine as we are entertained with Australian Country Music to suit the ambiance of the environment.
Ranch hands will treat us to a lively Whip Cracking demonstration before we depart Wetherby Station and the bush country life, returning to the ship.
Approximate Length: Seven hours, 30 minutes.
Suggested Attire: Casual with comfortable shoes. Some walking on uneven ground. Hats and sunscreen are recommended.
