Exclusive Shore Event: Skagway | Gold Rush Riding
Roll back in time and high into Alaska's soaring peaks on the White Pass and Yukon Route. Constructed for the Klondike Gold Rush nearly 120 years ago, today's relaxing ride offers not only stunning alpine and coastal scenery, but also a lesson in the immense challenges faced by the engineers and laborers who carved this illustrious railroad out of solid granite cliffs.
Our journey begins as we take a seat in our vintage car and settle in with a welcome beverage. As the train begins to slowly chug north, we'll pass the train shops where busy crews work on the rail fleet, and just beyond, we'll catch a glimpse of the Gold Rush Cemetery. As we ascend, we'll dine from an offering of freshly baked goods and regional appetizers, along with a full beverage service, as our host contextualizes our sublime views and brings to life the history of the Gold Rush. We will travel through a narrow portion of track named Rocky Point; as the views unfold, we'll see cascading waterfalls, wide-spanning train trestles, and perhaps a fellow train on the tracks above or below. We will pass through our first of two tunnels, climbing to reach Inspiration Point, offering us another view down to Skagway. Our turnaround is at White Pass, at an elevation of 2,885 feet; following the repositioning of engines from the north to the south of the train, we will begin our trip back to Skagway, taking in the same magnificent views.
Approximate Length: 3 hours, 15 minutes
Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Casual attire and light walking. Please note there are 5-6 steep steps to get onto the train.
PLEASE NOTE: All Virtuoso events ashore are capacity controlled and require a minimum number of participants to operate. Events are subject to change without notice.
